Crawl by dloliver Crawl by dloliver
A photoshop doodle that came to fruition in a pleasingly unexpected grotesque. Had little idea in my head as to what I was trying to do, except that I had some notion of a hollow, sagging, corrupted thing, half covering something luminous beneath.

"The nethermost caverns," wrote the mad Arab, "are not for the fathoming of eyes that see; for their marvels are strange and terrific. Cursed the ground where dead thoughts live new and oddly bodied, and evil the mind that is held by no head."

H.P. Lovecraft "The Festival", quoting the Necronomicon

Very pleased to say that this image was used by Chaosium for the cover of one of their Call of Cthulhu Scenarios. The modified image is here: dloliver.deviantart.com/art/Cr…

I love the lighting here and the glow effect, especially the way it all shines through the skin.

thank you. it was part doodle, part experiment.
A word of warning though. Never juggle pieces of phosphorus, sodium and/or potassium with your tongue. ;)

now you got me wondering what you thought it was at first...
a man with a shoggoth for a face? :P

This guy might not be exactly shoggoth faced...but it's definitely Lovecraftian. I probably would have gone with a quote from "The Thing on the Doorstep."

There was something it reminded me strongly of, but I can't quite place it at the moment. Though there's a touch of the "grey alien face" look to it.

A shoggoth-faced man sounds horrifying.

There's something intriguing about the mixture of decay and the glowing- two things not normally combined which results in something unexpected, and our imaginations suddenly start writing a story to try and explain it. I can almost hear it as well! Nice one, Dave! :)

I love how grim this monster is. The textures and colours are really interesting, it's cool how you managed to bring in all sorts of really warm colours yet still have the image be gloomy and mysterious. Love it :)
