"It was a paw, fully two feet and a half across, and equipped with formidable talons. After it came another paw, and after that a great black-furred arm to which both of the paws were attached by short forearms. Then two pink eyes shone, and the head of the awakened gug sentry, large as a barrel, wabbled into view. The eyes jutted two inches from each side, shaded by bony protuberances overgrown with coarse hairs. But the head was chiefly terrible because of the mouth. That mouth had great yellow fangs and ran from the top to the bottom of the head, opening vertically instead of horizontally."
—H. P. Lovecraft, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath
Something Ive been working on today. Trying to draw one of the strangest denizens of the Underworld in Lovecraft's Dreamlands.
The bizarre head wasnt the problem. I can manage bizarre. It was the crazy bifocated arms and their double forearm sections. Easy to visualise but a swine to actually draw. I think i solved the anatomy problem by doubling up on the upper arm muscle structures so that each forearm could have independant movement. The perspective is giving me a few problems, as per usual, but its more or less ok now. Will hopefully get this beastie done over the next day or so.
UPDATE : Well, very belatedly i decided to have another look at this sketch. Here, at least, is a start at the shading and colouring process, mainly on and around the head...
might even get around to finishing this thing eventually
