Nightgaunt by dloliver Nightgaunt by dloliver
Out of what crypt they crawl, I cannot tell,
But every night I see the rubbery things,
Black, horned, and slender, with membraneous wings,
And tails that bear the bifid barb of hell.
They come in legions on the north wind's swell,
With obscene clutch that titillates and stings,
Snatching me off on monstrous voyagings
To grey worlds hidden deep in nightmare's well.
Over the jagged peaks of Thok they sweep,
Heedless of all the cries I try to make,
And down the nether pits to that foul lake
Where the puffed shoggoths splash in doubtful sleep.
But oh! If only they would make some sound,
Or wear a face where faces should be found!

from "Fungi from Yuggoth" - by H. P. Lovecraft

Always been one of my personal favourites among Lovecraft's benighted underworld denizens.
Finally got around to having a go at drawing one.
Knowing what I'm like, it wont be long before I end up tweaking this detail or that. On something thats supposed to be black, its sometimes what not to define that does it, but I'm pretty sure i can see more details that will demand my attention before the day is much older...

EDIT: A few refinements to some of the highlights on the legs, hands and feet mainly.

EDIT: Lighting/definition tweaks. Not a big deal.

Most excelent! Not only is this creature terrifyingly fascinating but the shading finally reveals to me a technique I have been pursuing in vain up to this point. Though to be honest, if someone came up to me and told me that for spiting them they were going to turn me into an Eldritch horror of my choosing then this would be it. :D

I love the way hellish or nightmarish imagery can play with the gray lines beauty and sexual attraction. It builds a false sense of comfort while taking you on a horrendous nightmare. All the while you think you fear where it's taking you while you're somehow cuddled up to the worst hell of all!

Love the exclusion of eyes.  That exclusion brings an entirely new dimension of eeriness and imagination to the creature.  Bravo.

Most people dream about being carried away to far away lands by magic carpets or broomsticks.

Lovecraft wanted to be whisked off by faceless bat-winged creatures.

There's a poem by Lovecraft that's just that part as well. I remember it was my very first thing I read by Lovecraft and it was short and yet very descriptive, which I loved. Really good work with this, haven't seen all so many Nightgaunt-pieces which is a shame since they seem very interesting. :)

Just realised after my last comment that I was wrong, Night-Gaunts was indeed a segment from The Fungi From Yuggoth and the poem that I read was just that single part from that book. They didn't had the rest in that particular book for some reason, so I feel a bit dumb now ^^;. Should have checked it before posting I think ^^

I have two books filled with Lovecraft goodness, so I have that story somewhere ^^
But, there is a poem entitled just Night-gaunts and that's where I read it first. It's the same passage only I think the poem was released before The Fungi From Yuggoth, but I can be mistaken. :)
Crap, I want to read some Lovecraft now but I have to study :(

Sorry, I've been a little dead on motivation to type much, lately, and have been intermittently vacating from the computer, but I practically leaped out of my seat when I saw this!! :D This picture is epic to the extreme!!! :squee: (I know, not many people post these crazy icons here. XD) Honestly, there's no mistaking your style and continually exhibited prowess in art, and I love how you depict characters from story fragments in ways both gruesome and outright extraordinary, and this one is no exception. :D From what I'm seeing here, the creature is almost gargoyle-like in nature, and despite its humanoid anatomy, you caught the quadrupedal hunch in his posture as he perches on the rock flawlessly! Words couldn't justify how wonderfully majestic its pose is, and I really admire the style of the wings. :) Simply inspiring... The concept intrigues me that he lacks eyes, possibly from an onyx black substance coating his form, which I surmise from the liquid/collapsed look to where his eyes should be. Another thing that really catches my eye is his brilliant muscle structure... I probably shouldn't go on any longer. XD But I just love this!!!! Keep up the great work!

Always liked this critter and always wanted to draw one. Might work on the detail on the legs a little as i was a bit too keen to upload it :D

Heh, I know the feeling. xD I guess it explains why sometimes our deviations feel rushed or lacking in a minor detail that eludes our minds.... And good to know they put a smile on your face. :D
